Gotham City For Sale

I love seeing movies on the big screen. Last week, I joined my fellow blogulator cohorts in taking in the absolutely adorable new Pixar film, WALL-E. The futuristic love story of two robots who follow each other through outer space and beyond left more than one of us sobbing by the end. (Don't worry guys, I won't out you - I'm sure you really did just have something in your eye). Yeah, I've jumped on the WALL-E bandwagon - but it's pretty hard not to. You've got to have a heart of steel not to enjoy this movie.

The problem with seeing movies in the theater lately is that I almost crap my pants every time I see a trailer for The Dark Knight - and every movie shows the trailer for The Dark Knight. This Friday will no doubt blow every other 2008 release out of the water as the most anticipated movie ever makes its debut. Did I mention it comes out THIS FRIDAY!!!!!! I am so excited I can hardly stand it.

The original Batman is perhaps solely responsible for sparking my love of action flicks oh so many years ago (1989). There's nothing better than watching your favorite masked hero kicking ass and taking names on the big screen! And I've got to say that the actors playing Bruce Wayne have only gotten better through the years. Micheal Keaton did a pretty good job; Val Kilmer and George Clooney both uped the hunk factor; but Christian Bale has elevated Batman to dreamboat status. Maybe I'm just idly fawning here, but I don't see any way The Dark Knight could go wrong when it combines the uber-mega hotness of Christian Bale with the fast-paced car chases and explosions we've already seen in the trailer. Not to mention this will be Heath Ledger's final full-film performance, and there's already talk of an Oscar (not typical of action movies at all).

But the Batman series has always been highly anticipated, as seen through the years in the copious amounts of commercial sponsorships. So in preparation of this week's exciting release, I thought I would get in touch with my inner corporate whore and relive the Batman releases through their respective commercials:

Batman (1989)

Who better to sponsor the Batman series than the company that has a hold on everything? I love the flair the tiny little cape adds to the Diet Coke can.

Batman Returns (1992)

Coca-cola once again. Batman is so thirsty but Catwoman is cutting off Gotham's supply of Diet Coke. Will Batman get his hands on his favorite tasty beverage? Find out...

Batman Forever (1995)

A sandwich, Alfred? Are you serious? Why would Batman choose a home-made sandwich from the Bat cave when he could have a "superhero burger" with three beef patties from Mickey D's? Come on!

Batman and Robin (1997)

The movie that I almost forgot was part of the series. Lots of action figures but no corporate sponsors found. Hmmmm.

Batman Begins (2005)

If Mastercard has done anything right, it has been this advertising campaign. And using the scene where Batman is acquiring new-fangled, no doubt costly, gear? Priceless!

The Dark Knight (2008)

What makes a pizza a "Gotham City pizza?" 50% more meat, of course. I commend Domino's for getting in the Bat-game, but does extra pepperoni really measure up to McDonald's third slab of beef on the "superhero burger?" If you're going to get in the more meat biz, you gotta bring it.

Anyone hungry now? Well, grab a Diet Coke, order yourself a pizza, and try not to get too hot and bloggered as you continue to wait patiently for The Dark Knight. Repeat to yourself: "Friday is not that far away!"

ok, that mastercard ad is definitely a fan-made ad. there's not even voice-over..

and "have you had your break today?" is bringing me back.. how often do they change the slogan?

it's "did somebody say mcdonald's?" right now? or is it just that "ba da ba ba baaaaa, i'm loving it."

Ren Stevens alert! I'd call this a slightly-less-than-lateral movement for her since her Even Stevens days, but at least she's doing something!

Ren Stevens is the Domino's driver?! Awesome.

Whoa whoa whoa whoa, hopefully you're just judging the Batmans on hunkability, because Keaton was wayyyyyyy better than Val "My Teeth Are White and Everywhere" Kilmer or George "I Don't Want To Be In This Movie But At Least It's Not ER" Clooney.

Oh, I am strictly talking hunkability. Definitely Keaton was better than those other two.

When comes down to Keaton vs. Bale - I'm torn though...but I'm also slightly biased toward the hottness that is Christian Bale.

I never knew Gotham City was sooo meaty . . .

I think Christian Bale did a better job portraying the Bruce Wayne ego, whereas it is definitely a toss up between Keaton and Bale on who makes a better "Batman"

psh, Keaton was a terrible choice for batman. Batman is supposed to be serious, hunky, and dark...not Mr. Mom. I just couldn't get over him as a comedic actor. and he rates VERY low on the hunk scale. Of course, I didn't like george or val as batman, either...especially not val. learn to have more than one facial expression! I guess what I'm trying to say (in as jerky a way as possible) is that Christian Bale is by far the best selection for Batman thus far. He's perfect.

Speaking of changing actors...what's with the new James Bond? Daniel Craig?? I thought Bond was supposed to be handsome.

for my money, the best batman is adam west. why doesn't batman ever dance anymore?

  9. Blogger Unknown | 12:32 PM |

I must come to the defense of Val Kilmer as Bruce Wayne/Batman! He seemed soulless enough and enough of a loner to be the head of a major corporation and also be a vigilante at night, whereas Michael Keaton is Mr. Mom and George Clooney is way too much of a schmoozer to be the man. I do think though that Bale is the best of both worlds -- brooding, serious, a loner, and also, totally hunky!

Gotham City wouldn't be as "meaty" if Batman danced, Sean. Wink, wink.

  11. Blogger Sean | 1:14 PM |

true, dancing is a great form of cardiovascular exercise. batman would be much thinner and less bulky.

I didn't see any Keaton comedies (not even Mr. Mom!) until much after I took in the first two Batman experiences, so I thought it was weirder when he was trying to act comedic and 9-year-old me was all, "don't be funny, be Batman!"
