A Year to Remember

Ahhhh, a year in review. It always takes me about 10 months to get used to writing the new year on my letters and checks and whatnot. I get about two months of feeling really comfortable with it and then bam! they change it on me and the whole cycle starts again. Let's see, what did I do this year?

All We Are Saying is Give Peace a Chance

Probably the most interesting and surprising thing I saw was Yoko Ono performing at Pitchfork this summer. I mostly went to see Sonic Youth play Daydream Nation in its entirety, which ended up not being as great as expected because the sound system was super quiet and there were tons of jerks there smoking and pushing through the crowd with total disregard for anybody else.

I spent the entire second day of the festival by myself because none of my friends bought tickets for the second or third day. After a long, hot day of listening to music while having all different kinds of smoke blown in my face (ever since Minneapolis instituted a smoking ban, I've felt entitled to never having smoke around me at all - I know I'm spoiled) I was ready to go home before the headlining act. But then I stopped and thought, when am I ever going to see Yoko Ono? I'm certainly not going to actively seek out tickets to her concerts. So I stayed.

They gave us these little key-chain flashlights to wave in the air during "Give Peace a Chance," and we had to watch a 15 minute video before Yoko even came out on the stage about her excursions in peace and how the flashlights are used at all of her concerts to unify the audience in the cause.

Then we got Yoko in all her fabulous glory - pants suit, scarf, fedora, and all. The music was kind of rock, kind of arty, kind of weird. It was definitely an experience.

That's all I've got for now.

    i love yoko ono...kinda.

i'm glad they used flashlights to unify the audience. hundreds of tiny, keychain flashlights. now THAT says making a difference!

also, i still think the sonic youth performance was amazing, even with the bad sound system and the smoke...though the crowd was pretty difficult to deal with. i seem to remember someone actually standing with his back towards the music and smoking directly in my face.

Lucky thing Slint playing Spiderland in its entirety was so frakking awesome!!!!

But yeah, I can't say I wished I went to the rest of the fest. I think picking the best day and going just for that day and spending the rest of the weekend hanging out in Chicago is the way to go.

Though I am glad you got to see Yoko. So now whenever I hear that song in Rushmore I can now think of tiny stupid flashlight key chains.
