Qualler's Year in Review

Wow, what a year, gang, am I right? I mean, here we are, near the holiday season, and another year has passed! Wild, huh? I mean, CRAZINESS! Whoa. Amazing. Am I right or what? Anywho, as we are nearing the end of another crazy year, let me reminsce on some of the things, the, oh, 'notables' per se, of the year Twenty-Aught-Seven.

The Messengers
By far the best horror movie made about a sunflower seed farmer, this nugget-o-"horror" was an extra special birthday treat this past year, especially watching with my hetero-blog-partner Chris and my hetero-life-partner Brigitte. Dylan McDermott moved on to bigger and badder things this year (ABC's train wreck Entourage-meets-Desperate Housewives series Big Shots) and other horror movies that were actually good were released (28 Weeks Later counts as horror? Right? Crap, were there any good horror movies out this year?! At least until The Orphanage comes out?!?!?) but for a brief moment, on my birthday, and Super Bowl Sunday, the pleasure of an afternoon craptastic matinee was delightful. We also brought quesadillas into the movie theater; that wasn't as great of an idea.

Beverly Hills 90210
Yeah, you might say this show didn't have anything to do with 2007, right? Wrong -- thanks to the advent of DVDs on TV, the Blogulator clan enjoyed the DVD release of the first two full seasons of 90210 together. We witnessed the triumph (Brian Austin Green's character, David, overcoming his awkwardness to become popular), the sorrow (Brian Austin Green's friend accidentally shooting himself at his own birthday party), the almost-pregnancies (Shannon Dohrety's character Donna being a little "late"), and the forty-year-old-looking forehead (Luke Perry). We were able to re-visit that beautifully wrinkley forehead a little later in HBO's train-wreck of a series John from Cincinatti, but for 2007 and beyond, Brigitte and I will treat our marriage like Jim and Cindy Walsh do -- with a little humor, a lot of heart, and suspenders every day.

Juno
bI loooooove the free internet service that is Juno! I mean, if I can get dial-up internet for free with minimal advertising pop-ups to compensate for my free service, I will sign up right away. Oh, that was the name of a movie that came out this year, too, written by Mpls-based blogger Diablo Cody, she of The Pussy Ranch blog (that looks suspiciously like someone elses template!) that was excellent and is doing our city and state proud.

But in general, it's been another great year to live in Minneapolis and enjoy pop culture. From our beloved Uptown Theater playing the hippest movies around, to the music venues that bring in awesome music, to the lively community of pop culture enjoyers, I salute you. I can only hope that 2008 is as full of irony and joy as 2007 has been.

hahaha...the messengers!! what a film! i think i was the only one who was actually scared. that was a double-feature day, was it not? what other "film" did we see? I really love that the entire premise of Messengers was that a family, down on its luck, moves to the country to farm sunflower seeds. no one wants to move, and they are only doing it as a last resort (there's money to be made in sunflower seeds!) however, when the bank gives them an out at the beginning of the movie, and says that someone has offered to buy the farm for twice it's value, the father of the family says no...seems he feels that sunflowers will solve more than his money problems! great movie.

also, shannon dohrety's character on 90210 is Brenda, not Donna. god, you don't understand anything!! (runs away crying, slams door, calls best friend kelly to complain about the family).

How'd you sneak a quesadilla into the theater? I'd say that's an important 2007 highlight! And we should expand upon this in 2008 - I'm thinking ice cream, sushi, turkey sandwiches, soup, milkshakes!

You guys snuck in quesadillas. Not me. I'm a good patron.

    Or did I? I forget.

And I don't really understand how we watched that much 90210 in such a short period of time and yet it's taking forever for us to get through The Wire.

i think it's because several episodes of 90210 are easier to get through than several episodes of the wire...

I can't believe that Juno still exists, much less that it's still free. That was the first service my family had (10 years ago?), and, probably because of dial-up, I do not have great memories.

That fact that you settle for any pop-ups at all, however, defines the divide between me and you. Oh and you're also married, whereas I've never talked to a girl thing.

Someone should point out that paying for a land line phone + free (slow as ass) internet isn't that much better than paying for high speed internet + free voip phone. Shake free of the shackles of pop ups and slow speeds!!!!
