Funniest (and Saddest) Moments

This week has been a fairly eventful one. I took my first trip to Grand Marais, a beautiful, tiny town on the north shore of Lake Superior. I attended the theater - The Showboat Theater that is! Brigitte and I saw a delightful production of The Count of Monte Cristo, put on by University of Minnesota theater students. This week has also been huge for the gay and lesbian communities in California, where officials started marrying same-sex couples as of Monday. And, like usual, this week was big in pop culture too...

Arsenio Hall = the new Bob Saget?

We're going to see Arsenio Hall back on television soon, but not the way we're used to. This time around, Arsenio is taking the Bob Saget approach to primetime as the host of a new "America's Funniest Home Videos" knockoff. The new show is just called "Funniest Moments" for now and is set to air in the fall. The same basic concept as AFHV, "Funniest Moments" features "life's most outrageous moments caught on tape." This type of show is not exactly my cup of tea, but seeing as how AFHV is now in its 18th season (ABC's longest-running primetime show), something about shows like this must appeal to a lot of people. I just wonder what Arsenio's trademark is going to be on this - Bob Saget already has the monopoly on baby voiceovers. We'll just wait and see. I sure wish they'd bring back the "Arsenio Hall Show," though and it looks like I'm not alone. Apparently there is an entire fan website devoted to bringing back the "Arsenio Hall Show."

Conspiracy or Coincidence?

What's with all of the broadcasters dropping dead lately? In just the last couple of weeks we had Charlie Jones, sportscaster for NBC, and Jim McKay, host of "Wide World of Sports," go. Then, on Friday Tim Russert dies of a heart attack right in the NBC offices while preparing for "Meet the Press!" Yeah, 58 is not exactly too young for a heart attack, but it's also not that old. I first took this story at face value, but after talking it over with Jerksica, I've started questioning whether Russert actually had a heart attack or if someone was out to get him. Jerksica is a much greater conspiracy theorist than I, but it's a good question. Conspiracy or not, the man with the constant scowl and the tough questions will be missed.

Oh man I'm scared to watch those Arsenio clips on that site, because I'm afraid once I start I won't be able to stop. Eeeee!

Also, Jerksica is crazy. When I google "Tim Russert assassinated," I get a bunch of crazy YouTubers and a Ron Paul fansite.

For serious, Jerksica -- who would want Tim Russert dead? Democrats? Republicans? People who don't like reporters who are generally very balanced?

haha, those baby voice overs on AFHV are a classic. my sister and i often made our own AFHV show...we mostly just videoed ourselves with the camera upside down and would remark about how great it was to be on the ceiling. good times!
